Spools Thread
Why does a sewing machine require two spools of thread, one on top and one on the bottom?
I just bought a starter sewing machine and I don't have any idea why there are two spools of thread running at the top and bottom. It seems like the thread running from the top is the only one that's necessary.
You have to have a thread on top and on bottom, so that they can pierce the fabric from both sides and sew the pieces together. If it only came from the top, there would be nothing on the bottom to pull it back up through the fabric and stitch the pieces together.
I don't know what type of machine that you got, but most are similar in how they work, and I think that it is just going to take time for you to learn how to work it. I have been sewing for over 10 yrs and I still run into problems, so don't let it detere you.
