Top Sewing
singer sewing machine---top thread will not pick up bobbin thread?
First, put in a new needle. Subtle bends that are not readily apparent can cause this.
Then, grab your manual and check:
-- needle in correctly? (backwards needles only pick up bobbin threads by accident!)
-- threading error (particularly with the direction of threading)
-- bobbin error (backwards, improperly wound, not properly in bobbin case)
-- bobbin case problem (usually not in correctly, very occasionally a broken sewing hook)
If all else fails, check to see which of these matches your machine, and see if it looks like the machine is out of time (rarer than most techs make out -- out of time machines are usually caused by the needle hitting something hard!)

Note that the sewusa.com site also has threading diagrams for a lot of machines if you've misplaced your manual. (But get a copy of the manual -- very useful!)
